Discover how Jaipur-based Hexpressions, founded by Abhimanyu Singh and Shilpi Dua, creates affordable, eco-friendly homes using durable recycled paper panels.
Jaipur architects Abhimanyu Singh and Shilpi Dua, founders of Hexpressions, are transforming eco-friendly home construction with recycled paper honeycomb panels. These sustainable homes are built in just two weeks and cost only Rs 6-10 lakh.
The innovative panels, made from recycled paper arranged in hexagonal cells, are sandwiched between plywood or cement fibre boards. Reinforced with galvanized iron channels and hollow pipes, the material is lightweight, durable, fireproof, soundproof, and water-resistant—perfect for affordable, sustainable housing.
Shilpi explains, “The triangle is the strongest shape in construction because it maintains its form under pressure. A hexagon, composed of six triangles, enhances this strength, making it highly durable. This concept is similar to the technique used in commercial aircraft, where lightweight yet sturdy aluminum sheets are utilized for maximum efficiency and resilience.”
Hexpressions homes are built using locally made panels, enabling quick assembly. These lightweight panels make construction faster than traditional methods. Additionally, the structures are shock-absorbent, ensuring enhanced safety. Hexpressions offers homes in various sizes, ranging from 190 sq. ft. to 400 sq. ft., catering to different needs.
Addressing durability concerns, Shilpi explains, “There is no oxygen between the cells, which prevents the paper from catching fire.” Additionally, the panels are coated with a plant-based, water-resistant resin, and the hexagonal cells are filled with fly ash for enhanced fireproofing.
The lightweight design of these homes ensures easy transport across states, and trained professionals assemble the structures on-site. With 80% less environmental impact compared to traditional buildings, Hexpressions homes are not only affordable but also highly eco-friendly, offering a sustainable housing solution.
Hexpressions has already completed 50 structures, including hospitals and institutions, showcasing the versatility of their innovative design. The couple now plans to build 500 eco-friendly homes across India within the next five years. Highlighting the strength of their materials, Shilpi shares, “One square foot can hold up to 100 kg of load,” underscoring the durability and reliability of their sustainable homes.
With their groundbreaking innovation, Abhimanyu and Shilpi are demonstrating that sustainable housing is not just a possibility but the future of construction.
